Miscellaneous 2-axle tram #115

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus - tramway depot: A rather more sympathetic restoration is this motor and trailer tram set in the depot yard. Presumably these are 1898 originals from the first tramway line in the city, although they have lost their original identities - they were probably restored for the 115th year anniversary, then given another lick of paint recently. The system was metre gauge until the 1930s and trams like this would have come from Germany or Belgium, as the company was originally built under French ownership.

Х #101

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus - tramway depot: The Vitebsk tram and trolleybus company are very proud to have operated since 1898, making this the oldest public transport system in the whole of Belarus. Their 1934-built H Class tram has been mounted as a static exhibit in a small garden at the depot to celebrate 120 years of operation, although the paint scheme would better suit a garden shed than a proper restoration job. It`s good that it has survived, though.

МТБ-82Д #01

14 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Transport Museum: The tram and bus operator in the Belarus city of Minsk has recently opened a new museum where all their historic vehicles are collected together. Here is their 1950s MTB-82, the oldest trolleybus in the fleet.

Белкоммунмаш 321 #0036

14 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Belcommunmash factory: The Belarus factory is currently working on a large batch of trolleybuses for Odessa in Ukraine. Here is finished #36 in the works yard during final test - the factory has its own siding from the Minsk trolleybus network, which presumably allows them to take buses out on test.

Белкоммунмаш 43303А

14 september 2018 - Minsk. Belarus - Belcommunmash factory: A new battery bus undergoing final assembly for Elektratransport of Yerevan, Armenia. These buses are similar to trolleybuses, but store electricity by connecting to special overhead gantries at terminal stops, remaving the need for any conventional wires.

Белкоммунмаш 802Е

14 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Belcommunmash factory: I was allowed to visit the tram and trolleybus factory in central Minsk and photograph vehicles in the course of construction. Here is an 802E series tram, possibly for the Minsk network, during final assembly. There are also many trolleybuses of various types being built here for other systems in Russia and elsewhere.

Белкоммунмаш 802 #061

12 september 2018 - Novopolotsk, Belarus - tramway depot: The first TWB photo of this Belcommunmash-built prototype 001, numbered 061 in the fleet of the Novopolotsk tramway line, which runs from the city housing area to a chemical works situated, as was the Soviet policy, several kilometers away. I`m not sure what the problem is with this tram, but the city isn`t using it in service, even though it is now nearly four years old.

Kopřivnická 1919 #25

10 june 2013 - Ostrava, CZ - U Obory: The long, single track tram Line 5, which runs through the woods to the tiny Ostrava village of Zatisi, is a favourite route for running some of the extensive collection of historic trams kept by the city tramways. Here we see 1919 car #25 and trailer on an enthusiasts tour.

Богдан Т70115 #9996

10 june 2013 - Ostrava, CZ - depot and works, Martinov: This trolleybus seems to have moved about quite a bit and is now working in Vilnius, Lithuania. When this photo was taken, however, it was to be found in the DP Ostrava works yard, although the markings on the side panels suggest it was still a Cegelec demonstrator.

Tatra T2 #685

10 june 2013 - Ostrava, CZ - depot and works, Martinov: A very scruffy Tatra T2 originally from Praha and used here for works duties, but looks as though it was set aside, perhaps for eventual restoration as one of the historic vehicle fleet here in Ostrava.

Tatra T2 #681

10 june 2013 - Ostrava, CZ - depot and works, Martinov: This Tatra T2 is one of several historic cars kept in fine condition by DP Ostrava - there is even a separate depot reserved for them in the Martinov complex.

Leyland Titan PD2 RTW #RTW75

22 july 2005 - London, UK - Hyde Park Corner, Piccadilly: Preserved RTW75 makes an appearance at a Routemaster conversion day, this time for Route 14. There weren`t too many RM routes left by this time and they would soon be all gone, apart from the two short `tourist` routes left running in Central London (now reduced to just one (Route 15).

AEC Regent STL #STL2377

22 july 2005 - London, UK - Hyde Park Corner, Piccadilly: Inside a highbridge AEC STL-class bus of London Transport, showing the unusual pair of single seats at the back of the upper deck. I remember as a small child always trying to sit in one of these seats if I could, although my parents often wouldn`t let me go upstairs, because it was smoker`s territory and the air would be thick with smoke.

AEC Regent STL #STL2377

22 july 2005 - London, UK - Piccadilly, Hyde Park Corner: When the famous Routemaster buses were being replaced, it seemed that every new route conversion brought a celebration, with various preserved buses coming onto the London streets. This was the Route 14 replacement, with STL2377 from the London Bus Preservation collection running in passenger service, just for the day.

LDV Convoy #3753007

18 august 2008 - Redhill, UK - Redstone Manor: This is a Royal Mail Post Bus that suddenly appeared outside my house one morning. These vehicles were used to collect and deliver post in country areas with no conventional bus service. The Post Bus would follow a fixed route around the area once or twice a day, allowing the postman to carry out his normal duties, but passengers were also carried, normally between isolated villages and the local town. So, for little extra cost, a public bus reached places that would otherwise never have one. Post Buses were quite common in rural parts of Scotland and Wales, but I think they have now all died out, victims of cost cutting.

Leyland Tiger PS1 / Plaxton #PA164

6 august 2012 - Manchester, UK - Boyle Street: An interloper in the Manchester Museum of Transport is this Leyland PS1 bus of 1950, originally part of the huge Walter Alexander fleet, which covered much of Scotland from it`s base in Falkirk. These were the single deck equivalent of the mighty double-deck Leyland PD2 series, but perhaps not quite so many were sold.

Leyland Titan PD2 #224

6 august 2012 - Manchester, UK - Boyle Street: Another Leyland PD2 in the Manchester Transport Museum is this much earlier North Western Road Car example from 1947. This was a large regional bus company based in Liverpool.

Leyland Titan PD2 / MCW #77

6 august 2012 - Manchester, UK - Museum of Transport: As the Leyland factory was quite close to Manchester, it isn`t surprising that most bus operators in and around the city ran lots of them, including this fine PD2/13 from Bolton Corporation Transport. This vehicle was built in 1956 and eventually became a training bus before being retored for the museum. It now lives alongside a nice Bedford OB coach.

Foden PVSC6 / Lawson #LMA 284

6 august 2012 - Manchester, UK - Boyle Street Transport Museum: A distinctive (and very rare) Foden PVSC bus of 1949 belonging to R Bullock, an independent operator based in Stockport, just outside Manchester. Only a few of these were ever made and even fewer survive today.

Horse Omnibus #L2

6 august 2012 - Manchester, UK - Boyle Street, Cheetham Hill: The Manchester Museum of Transport has some interesting buses, but they are crammed in to the available space, so rather hard to photograph. Their oldest vehicle is this horse bus from around 1890, which was operated by the Manchester Carriage and Tramways Company until 1914 and has survived for another hundred years. At one time the Company operated over 500 trams and had over 5,000 horses to pull them.

Bombardier Incentro AT6/5 #214

30 march 2004 - Nottingham, UK - Radford Road: When designing the new Nottingham tramway, great care was taken in designing track layouts which would help to ease traffic congestion and speed up traffic flow. No-one thought to tell this particular driver, though, who has just left the vehicle across the tracks. The tram is now trapped, right across the busy junction with traffic building behind - a situation which continued for at leat ten minutes. It makes you wonder about the intelligence of some motorists!

Bombardier Incentro AT6/5 #204

30 march 2004 - Nottingham, UK - Noel Street: Looking down towards the Forest tram stop, no less than three moving trams can be seen.

Bombardier Incentro AT6/5 #204

30 march 2004 - Nottingham, UK - Goldsmith Street: Bombardier Incentro #204 on the first section of the Nottingham tram system, opened in 2004. The system has since been significantly extended to include further areas in the south of the city.

30 march 2004 - Nottingham, UK - Old Market Square: A bit of fun reflected in the windows of a department store in central Nottingham.

Bombardier Incentro AT6/5 #205

30 march 2004 - Nottingam, UK - Poultry: Nottingham`s new tramway system, not long after it opened to the public, showing tram #205 approaching the Old Market Square on the original line.

WStB L1 #2597

22 march 2011 - Wien, AT - Hietzing Kennedybrucke: Another nice tram out to play from the Vienna Tramway Museum is this Graz Type L1 of 1921. The Museum is an essential visit for any tramway enthusiast - it holds a bewildering collection of trams and buses from all stages of development of the vast Vienna tramway system. It seems that Weiner Linien and their predecessors have never thrown anything away.

Fuchs KSW #1

22 march 2011 - Austria, AT - Wien, Drechlergasse: One of the many Wiener Tramway Museum cars on an enthusiast trip along part of the vast Vienna tram network. This 1944-built tram is a KSW Type, (standing for German Krieg-Strassenbahn-Wagen), which was the model for thousands of N Type trams built in Poland and elsewhere as late as the 1960s. The little single track loop here is outside the Wien Breitensee rail station.

Graz WLB #200

22 march 2011 - Austria, AT - Vienna Karlsplatz/Oper: The Wiener Lokalbahn has kept this lovely Graz interurban tram from 1899 for special services, as shown here at their central Vienna terminal. Despite being nearly 100 years old, it can still keep pace with today`s fast trams on the busy route to Baden.

SGP GT8ZR Typ Mannheim #4-106

22 march 2011 - Wien, AT - remise Wolfganggasse: One of the lovely SGP trams from the Wiener Lokalbahn in the depot yard. This depot and the line that served it were all swept away recently, and maybe the tram has followed - I don`t know. Anyway, I consider them among the finest vehicles to run on any tramway in Europe and will be very sad when the last one is scrapped.

7 may 2007 - Wien, AT - Guntramsdorf, Feldgasse: A little bit of nonsense on a street-running section of the Wiener Lokalbahn in the village of Guntramsdorf. 7 may 2007 - Baden, AT - Waltersdorfer Strasse: Another WLB train sweeps out of Baden on a gutter-running single track section. These trams run about every fifteen minutes throught the day and, regardless of other traffic and pedestrians, travel really fast and people know to get out of the way. As well as their passenger operations, the Lokalbahn also has a thriving freight business and other activities.

SGP GT8ZR Typ Mannheim #4-111

7 may 2007 - Baden, AT - Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Ring: A WLB train sweeps along the centre of the road on this single-line, street running section of the line from Baden. Car drivers don`t argue with these huge trams which really are the `King of the Road` in places shared with normal traffic. Each two-car train is joined by a newer low-floor Bombardier tram, which are gradually taking over all services as more are delivered.

SGP GT8ZR Typ Mannheim #4-124

8 may 2007 - Wien, AT - Karlsplatz/Oper: Today I show my favourite tram system, the wonderful Wien-Baden Lokalbahn, which I regard as the finest interurban line in all Europe. Starting from this cramped little terminus in a side street along the busy Ringstrasse (where there is barely enough room for the normal two-car train), the line shares tracks with city trams for some distance, eventually gaining its own private line for the fast run to Baden. These huge 1980s SGP trams, complete with tables at each seat, are greadually being withdrawn and replaced by less photogenic low-floor models.

Lohner GT8 #74

11 may 2007 - Linz, AT - Remise Kleinmunchen: Two generations of tram in the Linz depot yard. The Lohner GT8 cars were lengthened to GT10 soon after purchase. The Bombardier CityRunner is very similar to those in Lodz, Poland, except the narrower gauge used here and the livery - I often say that my girlfriend looks like the back of a bus, but this one is just like the front of a tram.

11 may 2007 - Linz, AT - Remise Kleinmunchen: Inside the main Linz depot and works are these three rarely seen Postlingberg trams, which were the ones that survived the 2008 scrapping and line modernisation and still exist today. 11 may 2007 - Linz, AT - Postlingberg: Two of the Postlingberg trams at a passing loop on the way up the mountain. This line was built in 1898 and was originally worked by open-sided trams until the 1950s, when a fleet of these locally-built cars took over. One of the original cars is (was?) still in the depot and came out on special occasions, although since the gauge change I wonder if it can run on the line any more.

ESG T2 #VI

11 may 2007 - Linz, AT - Postlingberg: I visited the unique Postlingbergbahn just before it was `modernised` in 2008-9. This is one of the steepest tram lines in the world, reaching a gradient 11.6% or 1:9 without rack, cable or any other assistance. It was separate from the Linz city tramways because their track is an unusual 900mm wide and the Postlingbergbahn was a metre gauge line. There is the top station showing two of the 1958-built trams - note their Roman numbering system and the continued use of trolley poles. Linz city completely re-gauged the line to 900mm and swept away nearly all these old trams. They put in a connection to their other lines, plus three new low-floor Bombardier Flexity trams specially modified for the steep gradient, so services can now run right through from here to Linz Hauptbahnhof.

Graz Haller #2

14 may 2007 - Innsbruck, AT - Muhlsee: Line 6 of Innsbruck Tramways twists and turns up into the mountains with hardly a building in sight on its way to the village of Igls. Here is the lonely halt at Muhlsee with a 1904 Graz tram from the local tram museum passing on a special trip. Only the occasional hiker is picked up here!
