Sanok SW1 #1892

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske tramway depot: For leisure and enthusiast trips around their system, Kiev maintains this smart little Sanok 4-wheeled tram which originated in Poland.

K3R-N #412

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tram depot: Before Kiev were able to find the money to purchase a new fleet of nice new articulated trams, several small groups of home-built vehicles were produced, using the numberous Tatra T3 cars as a basis for conversion. This particular type, built in the Kiev workshops, is designated Type K3R-N and this one was constructed by placing trams 5555 and 5542 back-to-back with a new, low floor middle section.

71-414K #760

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - (south west) depot (Shevchenko?): Now we switch our attention to the depot that serves the upgraded fast tram lines to the south and west of Kiev city centre. First, here is #760, one of a batch of 2016-built PESA Focstrot articulated low-floor vehicles that run on Lines 1,2 and 3. I believe this place is called Shevchenko.

КТВ-57 #AB-6

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske tramway depot: Another "AB" series works car in the Kiev fleet. I think these are ex-KTB-57 passenger cars?

КТВ-57 #AB-4

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske tramway depot: Back on the west side system, here is one of two "AB" numbered trams in the Kiev works car fleet. I assume that the designation tells you what these trams are designed for - my guess is that they are towing cars to pull broken down trams around the network? That would explain the extra bank of resistances on the roof, where they are cooled by the outside air.

T3UA-3 #601

9 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Darnitska: Kiev #601 was the first of a small handful of Tatra cars given a makeover in the local workshops and now has a small low-floor section in the centre.

ЮМЗ К-1 #325

9 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine: Just outside the east side tram depot is this modified and updated Tatra T6, one of a small batch to have had this treatment. Sorry that the sun was in entirely the wrong place, leading to a very bad photo. We haven`t pictured this tram before, though....

ГС-4 #С-22

7 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Darnitska tramway depot: This snow clearing machine lives on the east side tramway system in Kiev city and is shown here parked in part of the old Darnitska depot. There were several other treasures here, including a line of unusual vehicles in the adjacent track work depot, but a `jobsworth` security guard would not allow me anywhere near them, so they will have to wait until another time.

МТВ-82 #1346

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske tramway depot: The standee windows of this ex-passenger tram reveal it to be an MTV-82 class vehicle of around 1950 - now quite a rare survivor. What it`s now used for is a mystery - perhaps the GRU use it to travel round the tramway network in secret? Anyway, it looks very much like a disguised American PCC car in this condition.

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske tram depot: The last of five snow clearing trams at the Podilske depot is this snow broom #C-11, which has slightly different bodywork than the others already shown. All these vehicles are of two or three standard types seen thoughout the former Soviet Union.

Снігоочисник КЗЕТ #С-5

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske tram depot: This vehicle is configured as a snow broom to sweep light snow from the tracks, but can be quickly fitted with a plough if conditions warrant.

ГС-4 #С-14

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske tram depot: A quick look at the various snow clearing trams at the Podilske depot which serves the west bank of the Kiev network. As the lines here are nearly all in the street, quite a large fleet is used to keep the tracks clear during the winter.

Tatra T3SU #ПМ-8

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske depot: A useful-looking open truck on a tram chassis, either converted from a passenger vehicle or originally built for this purpose. Although the Kiev tramways has a central workshop, likely to be involved in distributing such things as wheels to each of its depots, this is on the `wrong` side of the river, so perhaps most fetching and carrying is done by motor truck.

КТВ-57 #ХДМ-1

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske depot: This is where my British computer keyboard lets me down! The fleet number is obviously different in Cyrillic and I`m not sure of the function of this tram - maybe some kind of hopper to carry bulk material for track works?

ГС-4 #С-11

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske tram depot: Fleet number C-11 is a standard Soviet-type snow clearing vehicle, fitted in this case with a plough. Much of the track on the Kiev system is laid in the street, apart from a couple of lines on this side of the system, one which has recently been reconstructed as a fast, fully-segregated route and the other, which wanders for a very long distance into a forest to the north of the city.

КТВ-57 #Г-1

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske tram depot: A large system, now fallen on hard times and mostly neglected, the Kiev tramways are now divided into two separate zones east and west of the Dnieper river. What investment there is has taken place on the west bank, where new trams are operating on rebuilt tracks. As would be expected, there were once many works trams around the system supporting operations and many remain, although they look as though they are no longer used to any extent. Here are some photos of ones which remain, all in the yard of a depot just to the north of the city centre. This first one is a general carrier truck and is still well used.

РВЗ-6М2 #432

14 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: This PB3/RVZ Type tram #432 has found its way into the Minsk museum and has been nicely restored.

Tatra T6B5SU #001

14 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: The large bus and tram operator in the capital city of Belarus has recently established a museum to display several of their more interesting and significant vehicles, including this Tatra T6BSU #001, which was the first of this type to come here in 1983 and ran in service until 1996. Although it has been very nicely restored, outdoor storage won`t keep it looking smart for very long in the harsh Belarussian winter.

ЛМ-49 #235

9 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - tramway depot: This sign is displayed on the side of the PB3-Type tram which is plinthed at the entrance to the depot. The tram must be special in some way, but my complete lack of Russian language and Cyrillic script prevents me from reading it - perhaps one of our colleagues can oblige? Apologies if it just says "A present from Siberia".

ЛМ-49 #235

9 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - tramway depot: This PB3-Type tram is displayed on a plinth at the entrance to the Minsk tramway depot, but I can`t find a fleet number on it. The city had quite a large number of these and this particular one must be significant - see my next photo.....

РШМв-1 #РШМв-001

10 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - tramway depot: This ex-passenger tram has been photographed once before, but strangely had a different fleet number - now it is quite clearly marked "PWMB-001".

ГС-4 #С-9

10 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - tramway depot: The last of the three snow clearing vehicles in the Minsk Tramways fleet.

ГС-4 #C-7

10 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - tramway depot: Fleet number C-7 is set up as a snow broom to sweep snow from the tracks, but can quite easily be switched to ploughing deep drifts if required. Again, a bow current collector is used.

ГС-4 #C-8

10 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - tramway depot: One of three similar snow clearing machines at the Minsk depot. Note that all three have old-fashioned bow current collectors and not pantographs as used by the rest of the fleet. Is this deliberate, or have they never been replaced? Not many places still use these in service.

Duewag GT8 #180

10 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - terminus of lines 1,5,6 and 11: This place obviously has a name, but to a non-Russian speaker such as me, this is the only way I can identify it. Here is the Minsk tramways museum car, a 1969 Duewag GT6 one of several which came from Karlsruhe in Germany when local first-generation cars were being replaced. It`s now looking rather rusty, however, and would benefit from a full restoration before it falls apart.

Белкоммунмаш 60102 #060

10 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - tramway depot: One of the Belkommunmash vehicles bought by the Minsk city tramways in recent years - this is fleet #060 seen in the depot yard.

Белкоммунмаш 60102 #056

11 september 2018 - Novopolotsk, Belarus: One of the Belkommunmash trams which the Novopolotsk system has purchased in recent years to replace the original vehicles in front-line service. These newer trams now run the basic, all-day service, and the old ones are kept for the rush at shift-changing times at the chemicals factory.

71-605 #007

11 september 2018 - Novopolotsk, Belarus - tram depot: The person responsible for allocating fleet numbers obviously got a bit carried away when the number was handed out for the Novopolotsk oerhead line inspection and repair tram, which was originally one of the normal passenger vehicles. "Licensed to kill" with what, I wonder?

ТК-28 #ТК 28

11 september 2018 - Novopolotsk, Belarus - tram depot: The Novopolotsk rail carrying tram. I have no idea what the fleet number signifies.

ГС-4 #N2

11 september 2018 - Novopolotsk, Belarus - tram depot: The third member of the Novopolotsk snow clearing fleet is #N2, shown here store in the depot for the summer.

ГС-4 #N3

11 september 2018 - Novopolotsk, Belarus - tram depot: Fleet number N3 is a little different type of snow plough.

ГС-4 #N1

11 september 2018 - Novopolotsk, Belarus - tram depot: Although the Novopolotsk tramway runs entirely on private track away from roads, it is not so well served by specialised works trams as, for example, the similar system in Mazyr. It does have three similar snow clearing trams, however, of which this one looks as if it is the oldest.

Белкоммунмаш 60102 #060

11 september 2018 - Novopolotsk, Belarus - tram depot: To replace the original fleet of trams, a small number of new vehicles has been obtained from builder Belkommunmash and this is one of the most recent. These are now used to maintain a basic service for residents of the town, running about every thirty minutes until shift change times, when almost every available tram runs in a convoy to the chemical plant.

71-605 #045

12 september 2018 - Novopolotsk, Belarus - tram depot: Today, some photos of ths isolated system in the far north-west of Belarus, built in 1974 as part of the Soviet policy to transport large numbers of workers to unpleasant industries, well away from housing. In this case, the objective is a big chemical works. The original fleet of trams supplied when the system opened included #45, shown here at the depot. These trams are now principally used for worker transport only at shift change times and stand idle the rest of the day.

2-axle service tram

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: I coud not finish this photo feature on the works cars of Vitebsk Tramways without a shot of this "contraption" which lives in the depot yard and obviously sees regular use - but what for? I can`t begin to imagine......

ТК-28А #РТ-2

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: Another specialised rail carrier in the yard of Vitebsk tramways. As well as all these works cars, there are several inveresting old trams just left to rust away here.

ГС-4 #TC-9

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: Yet another snow plough in the yard of Vitebsk tramways. I guess they must have hard winters here and need all this equipment?

ЛМ-68М #РШ-1

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: Already recorded on TWB is this general purpose works car, painted in a different livery to the others here - does this indicate that it was brought here from another system elsewhere?

ВТК-01 #ГС-11

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: Another snow broom.

ВТК-01 #ГС-12

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: One of the Vitebsk snow clearing trams, this one fitted with rotating brooms to sweep loose snow away from the tracks.

МТВ-82 #ГП-1

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: Another interesting-looking works tram, but completely squeezed into a place where photographs were impossible. I think this was probably once a passenger MTV-82, but I couldn`t see what type of body it now carries.

ГС-4 #ГС-10

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: One of the standard snow clearing trams found on every tramway system in the old Soviet bloc - this particular one is fitted with plough attachments.

МТВ-82 #ГП-2

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: This hopper tram was obviously once a passenger car and has a very distinctive front end that I have seen before somewhere - MTV-82? Anyway, it is now fitted with twin hoppers to carry bulk materials such ans graven an ballast to sites where it is required.

ТК-28 #РТ-1

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: A specialised rail carrying tram of the Vitebsk tramways. Although this system runs almost entirely in the streets, it has a large selection of works trams, although some do not appear to have been used for some time.

РВЗ-6М2 #ВС-1 297

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus: Today I will show pictures of all the works trams seen in the depot of Vitebsk tramways, the oldest system in Belarus. A few problems, though - I have no idea of the make and type of most of these vehicles and they were rather crammed in to the depot sidings, making photography difficult. This overhead line car is easy to identify, though, as it has already been listed on TWB and helpfully shows its original fleet number on the side window. I would be glad of some help to identify their original makes and types, please, as I can`t translate Cyrillic script - thanks.

ВТК-09Д #C-07

11 september 2018 - Mazyr, Belarus: Just a little different from the other works trams in the Mazyr fleet is this hopper tram #C07 obtained from Minsk. This operates by opening the bottom-hinged central door, which allows a truck to load ballast, gravel or other bulk material from the roadway into the hopper, so it can then be carried to where it is needed.

71-605 #C-06

11 september 2018 - Mazyr, Belarus: Another snow clearing tram, this time with an internal system designed to sweep the snow away from the tracks.

ВТК-06 #C-05

11 september 2018 - Mazyr, Belarus: Identical to the rest of the passenger fleet, this works tram is equipped for the inspection and repair of overhead electric lines, a particular requirement where the entire route runs away from the street.

ВТК-01 #C-04

11 september 2018 - Mazyr, Belarus: Mazyr works tram #C04 is a snow sweeper, looking externally much the same as the rest of the passenger fleet.

ВТК-01 #C-03

11 september 2018 - Mazyr, Belarus: Mazyr works tram #C03 is a snow broom identical to those once supplied to most Soviet tramways. This one is in particularly fine condition.

71-605 #C-02

11 september 2018 - Mazyr, Belarus: Works car #C02 is a bogie crane car based on a VTK-10 chassis.

Сетеизмеритель (71-605) #C-01

11 september 2018 - Mazyr, Belarus: Opened in 1988 to connect the big Mazyr oil refinery with the housing areas up to 20km away, this tramway system runs entirely on private right of way, so is provided with a number of works trams to support all track works away from public roads. Mostly supplied when the line was first opened, these trams are hardly used and are kept in sparkling `as new` condition. This is works car #C01, an overhead line inspection and repair vehicle.

71-154М #450

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine: Another one-off vehicle standing in the fast tram depot yard is this one from Pragiomex (so presumably mostly Tatra T3 components underneath the fancy new body shell). From the photos taken of this tram, it seems to be an enthusiasts` `pet`.

K3R-NNP #550

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine: This fairly new articulated tram was standing in the yard of the depot at the far end of the fast tram routes in Kiev. From its appearance and the fact that I didn`t see another one like it, I think it must be a prototype from Belkommunmash?

71-414K #774

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine: In order to equip the newly-designated fast lines of the Kiev tramways, a large fleet of Fokstrot class GT6 trams has recently been obtained from PESA in Poland, an interesting purchase, allowing this company to break into the Russian market for the first time.

Електрон T5B64 #805

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine: It isn`t hard to see where the money is being spent on the Kiev tramway system - routes 1,2 and 3 have recently been upgraded into a network of entirely private-right-of-way fast lines from the main railway station into the south west suburbs of the city, complete with high platform stops and fencing throughout to allow higher speeds. To re-equip these lines, new trams are being purchased, including these attractive low-floor examples.

T3UA-3 #602

9 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine: A definite candidate for today`s "Spot the Tatra T3" competition is this semi-low floor car, one of a small series built in the local tramway workshops and seen here at the end of Line 22 on the less-favoured left bank system. I guess that most money is going in to the lines on the opposite bank and that this group of lines will eventually close.

K3R-N #405

9 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine: If you cut open this two-rooms-and-a-bath tram, I`m sure you would find a couple of Tatra T3SUCs peeping out - did Pragiomec have a hand in its construction, I wonder? Anyway, it is one of a small series working on the less-favoured left bank of the city tramways, seen here at the end of Route 29, one which runs along a secret alley between more important streets and which can only be known to local residents. A stranger passing by within 100 metres would never even know the line was there.

Tatra T3SUCS #5656

9 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine: The once-extensive tramway in Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine. is now split between the two banks of the River Dneiper and is no longer a main form of transport in this large and sprawling city. There is a marked contrast between the two sides of the network - on the left bank there seems to be little new investment and the trams run along poor tracks and, as here on Route 29, in unmade back streets away from large centres of population. Very few new trams run here and those which do are either recent second-hand purchases from Praha, as seen here, or are T3 variants which have been hacked around to articulate them or form central low-floor sections.

РВЗ-6М2 #418

13 september 2018 - Vitebsk, Belarus - COOO "Mapko": A pleasing survivor from Soviet days is this PB3 tram of 1988, which somehow looks a lot older. The Vitebsk company have kept this in full operational condition for visiting enthusiast groups.
