Tatra T2R #20
29 september 2006 - Liberec (CZ) – vozovna/zajezdnia/depot Mrstikova. A final Tatra T2 selection from Liberec. In the depot yard, two ex-Ostrava Tatra T2s wait for scrapping. Note that these are standard gauge (not metre gauge like the other surviving Liberec T2s). The depot itself is almost entirely dual gauge, which makes for some interesting track layouts!

29 september 2006 - Liberec (CZ) – vozovna/depot/zajezdnia Mrstikova. Goodness knows where this metre-gauge KT4D came from! Anyway, it’s now a Liberec driving school tram, still showing its German origin. Does anyone recognise the tram or its paint scheme? Cottbus, perhaps, or maybe Braunschweig? It’s not been pictured on TWB before – at least, not since it came to Liberec, and it’s the only KT4 they have.

29 september 2006 - Liberec (CZ) – Horni Hanychov. An unmodified T3 pair of 60 + 59 at the terminus of Line 3, which is high above the city. So high, on fact, that an Olympic ski jump is situated just above the tramway at this point.

29 september 2006 - Liberec (CZ) – Lidove Sady. T3 cars 47 and 24 stand at the northern terminus of Line 2. Car 47 has been modified with a central low-floor section. The plan is that a LF car runs paired with an unmodified car, so there is always a low-floor section people can use. Red sticker = standard gauge tram – are you beginning to get the general idea? I hope the tram drivers can remember which is which! Here, the track was converted not long ago.

29 september 2006 - Liberec (CZ) – Fugnerova. The hub of Liberec’s transport operations is here at Fugnerova, where trams of two gauges and buses all meet. T2 car 26 waits to make a trip along the interurban line to Jablonec.

29 september 2006 - Liberec (CZ) – Soukenne namesti. The nicely restored Ringhoffer car of 1929 waits in the city centre for a group of enthusiasts. Metre gauge, of course (the tram, not the enthusiasts). This was an Usti nad Labem car that came to Liberec when that system converted to trolleybuses. Note the headlight - for travelling in the other direction, a red shade is moved across to make a rear lamp - simple, but effective!

29 september 2006 - Liberec (CZ) – Viadukt. These Tatras carry a blue sticker, so are metre gauge – clearly visible from the wheels on the mixed-gauge track. This turning loop at the west end of Liberec city is now the farthest point that metre gauge trams can operate, as the tracks beyond here are standard gauge only. These are Tatra T2s, of course – the only place where they are still running.

29 september 2006 - Liberec (CZ) – Saldovo namesti. As most tramway fans will know, this is a fascinating city. Liberec city tramways began to convert from metre to standard gauge, in accordance with a central Czechoslovak policy, but the work remained unfinished in 1992 when the new Czech Republic came into existence. The long interurban line to Jablonec is still metre gauge, although there have been various plans to convert it and divert the route onto the tracks of a parallel railway line. Liberec therefore still has two fleets of trams and much dual gauge trackwork in the city, some of which is needed for the metre gauge tram to reach the depot. I love the little red ‘1435’ badge on the front, just to remind the driver of this tram what gauge it is (the metre-gauge Tatras have a blue ‘1000’ sticker).
