I can't understand why we had to do so much to be let to EU in 2004, and Romania has done nothing and also was let...
In Poland, you have WARS cars to use when you travel - here they have cows! Parts of Romania are still very poor, as you see here, and are still suffering from the history of their mad dictator, who forced people to leave the land and move to awful apartments in the big cities. Now they are going back to the land, but have no money and no modern equipment. Poland was also a poor country, but the people work very hard and are better organised (and less corrupt).
there's a big difference between east and west Romania generally, this country is still a little bit underdeveloped. I hope it will change very quickly (just look at the photos from 2002-2003)
If you really want to see amazing photos (from 1950s and 1960s) go here http://tramclub.org/index.php?sid=953cdec0c3eec7b2d72de6ecf71fb000 and look under city names for a gallery photos taken by Hans OERLEMANS. These are the most wonderful tram pictures I have ever seen (especially of Sibiu and Arad).
Those funny "trains" to Ghioroc and surrounding villages are amazing! Thanks for this link!
@ Adam G. Some of those big green interurban cars still exist and are kept in the Ghiroc depot, which is a small museum, and sometimes they come out on the line for tram fans. But sadly, not much money in Romania for tram preservation (even less than in Poland), so they spend most of the time locked away.
Some parts of Poland are still poor too, but it's hard to notice it living in Warsaw.
I think is a good idea to ask administrator to add link to photrans.eu city pages there
Good thinking, Tomek - there are some beautiful historic pictures there and their news items aren't too difficult to understand if you know some English or French language. In fact, some users write in English.
