Gdynia wants to have lowfloor vehicles, so Mercedes'es are compromise on having old middlefloor and expensive new lowfloor trolleys. The electric motors are regenerated and put inside body of Mercedes O405N. Now we have 21 such trolleys with classic control and 1 with chopper control. In this year another one with classic control are going to be produced, but probably in september we will have first Mercedes with asynchronous control and batteries, that will let trolley to move 3 km without energy in traction.
Thanks Only this one time in Gdańsk and Gdynia? Answering your question: All buses in Gdynia are low floor for a long time now, but trolleys have always had a higher percentage of high floor vehicles. They don't have enough money to buy a large amount of new trollino's. Mercedes is a good idea to keep up with the rest of the vehicles in the network. Engines are from scrapped jelcz trolleys.
A few trolleybus companies (notably Wellington, NZ) have done this in the past. The electrics from a trolley last pretty much as long as those of a tram, whereas the chassis lasts pretty much as long as a bus (unless it's made in Switzerland :P). Hence it's pretty logical to have the electrical equipment serve inside at least two different bodies throughout its lifetime.
Thanks to both of you - very clear explanation interesting. I was going to post a Gdansk photo, too, but the system won't let me add a new vehicle at the moment (yes - a Gdansk vehicle not already in phototrans.eu - amazing!) So, you may have to wait another day for this. To answer ikarus - yes, I went only once to both cities ;-(
Adding form doesn't work but you can use the clone function and then edit everything you want.
I can't think of any vehicle present in Gdańsk two years ago and not present in the database...
I'm a little bit stuck, because I need to add the vehicle and the system won't let me at the moment. I could add a model, and operator and all the other functions if I wanted, but not a vehicle. Do we know if there is a little problem with the software right now?
Thanks, Marek.
OK, I posted that mystery vehicle - but I think I got suckered......
