What engine is used in this bus? And which one was the most common in Chavdar buses?
The engine is called MAN D 2856 LUH and has 340 h.p. A "Voith" - automatic gearbox is used. But I heard that in Sofia mad scientists have put an engine of "KAMAZ" on one of these buses. "Chavdar" won a contest for new buses in a Russian city in the second half of the 1990s, but one of the requirements was that the engines need to be built by "Mercedes". But "Mercedes" participated in the contest too and since they lost, they refused to give "Chavdar" engines. So no 141 buses were selt to Russia and the manufacturer bankrupted later. BTW, the mayor of Burgas did not pay these buses (except a down payment), because the announced prise was in USD. That's one very absurd reason, but it worked then in the court. These two reasons were the executioners of "Chavdar" along with the government that made sure the manufacturer bankrupt. The reason was "the low quality of the production". BTW, companies from Western Europe were interested to buy the bankrupting manufacturer, but the then prime-minister said: "No". The older Chavdar models are really pieces of garbage, but I think 141 & 131 were one step further for the manufacturer and "Chavdar" could make their models better in future, so that they can be as good buses as the German buses, but no... It's all in the history now.
