31 august 2004 - Leipzig, Germany – Hauptbahnhof. A three-car motor + motor + trailer set of Tatra T4s on Line 16 leaves the tram station. Tram-trains run all over the city on this very large network, howling along with that characteristic Tatra sound - super!

31 august 2004 - Leipzig, Germany – Hauptbahnhof. A general view of the tram station. 1109 in the centre is one of the 1995 Siemens-Duwag cars, but in a different paint scheme. Similar car 1145 on the right is drawing a matching trailer – Leipzig uses a lot of trailers of varying types and also runs three-car Tatra trains.

31 august 2004 - Leipzig, Germany - Hauptbahnhof. A low-floor trailer running behind Tatra T4 2138. Leipzig has adopted all kinds of new tram designs – this one doesn’t look too bad, although it’s a bit too box-like for my taste.

31 august 2004 - Leipzig, Germany – Hauptbahnhof. Another candidate for the ‘ugliest tram’ prize must be this 1995 Siemens-Deuwag design for Leipzig. Hardly an oil painting, is it? This is the vast, four track tram station outside the main railway station. This place is tram heaven, but taking photos is quite scary, as trams are moving continually in both directions, so you need to be awake.

30 august 2004 - Halberstadt, Germany – Friedhof. Line 1 terminates outside the Halberstadt tram depot and there is no loop here, so cars must either be double-ended or else turn on a wye into the depot yard. This GT4 came originally from Freiburg - even the advertising livery seems to blend in well with the town. Other GT4s came here from Stuttgart.

30 august 2004 - Halberstadt, Germany – Dominikanerstrasse. Halberstadt has a rather nice small-town tramway. In 2004, all services were still operated by traditional cars, but now low-floor ‘Leoliners’ from Leipzig have arrived. Parts of the old town are an architectural gem and the pretty little GT4 cars always seemed to fit perfectly into the mediaeval streets.

23 august 2004 - Wurzburg, Germany – depot/zajezdnia Sanderau. This GT6 had been turned into a very smart works car for scrubbing and lubricating the tracks. It’s an ex-Bielefeld car from the same batch that went to TP Lodz and the works car conversion is similar to the Lodz works car 92002.

23 august 2004 - Wurzburg, Germany – Hauptbahnhof. The LHB GT-E Type looks like a box on wheels. They even painted this one with naked women, and it still looks awful! ! Wurzburg is a very lovely city…but their trams must have been designed by a Government committee.

23 august 2004 - Wurzburg, Germany – Dominiker Platz. Some of us on TWB discussed recently what makes a beautiful tram. Wurzburg surely wins the prize for ugliness - what do you think? In English, we have a saying - ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder’ (in other words, if it looks good to you, it is good, and it doesn’t matter what others think). I would have to be very drunk indeed to find these beautiful.
