Dennis Lancet III / Reading #ASV 900

4 may 1987 - Station Way, Crawley, UK: The road between London and Brighton (about 50miles/70km) is popular for various vehicle rallies, including the one for old commercial vehicles, run each May. At Crawley, around half distance, is a rest stop and many vehicles turn in here for refreshments. This rare Dennis Lancet was owned from new by the same family coaching concern, but more recently was bought by preservationists.

Leyland LB5 / Dodson #XU 7498

4 may 1989 - Brighton Road, Crawley, UK: The annual London to Brighton rally for commercial vehicles always produces a few buses often not seen before, like this 1924 Leyland of the Chocolate Express company, one of over 200 "pirate" bus operators that ran alongside the main London General company in the 1920s. These companies were closed down by new laws in 1934 and this bus disappeared, only to be found derelict on a farm in Norfolk in 1984, rescued and fully restored. It always amuses me to see an historic vehicle broken down - a large crowd of people instantly forms and just gets in the way, none of whom have the faintest idea what the problem is, but all with an opinion.

Commer Shooting Brake #EC 634

7 may 1989 - Station Way, Crawley, UK: Something for the weekend? Just the thing to keep at home for bus spotting trips, perhaps, is this Commer estate bus dating from 1909 (so almost 110 years ago, or nearly as old as me). It was originally the property of the 5th Lord Lonsdale and used at his extensive estate in Cumbria, then found use as a hotel bus in Buckinghamshire. It was found in a country barn in 1955 and extensively restored, as can be seen here. Apart from the solid tyres (which make the ride a bit bumpy) it`s a lovely thing. Note the chain drive.....

Scania N230UD / Optare Olympus #895

30 july 2012 - London Borough of Bromley, Elmers End.

Scania CN230UB 4x2 EB #574

5 march 2010 - Crawley, Southgate Avenue. We waited with Dave for three buses at this spot - only ONE of them used the bus lane at all. What for anyway? The bus lane is 100m long, so most of the day the buses don't really need to slow down to 10km/h to get into the guided portion, whereas the traffic jams caused by halving the road capacity at this sport cause the buses to actually run slower in the peak than before.

Scania CN230UB 4x2 EB #580

5 march 2010 - Crawley, London Road / Crawley Avenue. Dave Vigar's local area is inhabited by this silly example for how rubbish Bus Rapid Transit can be. On the 10km-long route 10 (Gatwick Airport - Bewbush via Crawley) there is a total of 200m of guided bus lanes (two sections ca. 100m each) - which buses don't generally tend to use. Also, one of the streets leading to Bewbush has been designated as bus only (read: the bus was artificially made faster), and one of the roundabouts on the northern by-pass was modified like so. The effect of this is that buses have to stand twice at a red light (before the roundabout and here), unlike other vehicles, which only need to stop once. All works were financed by the local council.

Scania CN230UB 4x2 EB #579

Dennis Falcon P3 #EFN 568

3 may 1992 - Crawley, Sussex, UK. The famous Dennis company stopped building buses in the 1960s, then re-emerged in the 1990s with the Dart and other very popular models. This 20-seat Falcon was a typical rural bus operated by East Kent Road Car, forerunners of today's Stagecoach company. 20 seats? That's all we get in many buses today (but with 100 standing!). Is this progress?

Guy Arab III / Park Royal #167

3 may 1992 - Crawley, Sussex, UK. A line of buses taking part in the 1992 HCVC London - Brighton rally. The Guy Arab was a very strong and reliable bus in the 1940s and 1950s and was the choice of many town and city-owned operators, like Southampton. They removed the roof in 1967 and got another eight years of service from this bus. Alongside is a Bristol Lodekka of Southern Vectis, the Isle of Wight operator.

Bristol L6B / Beadle #279

3 may 1992 - Crawley, Sussex, UK. A preserved Bristol single deck bus of the old Wilts and Dorset company. Many bus companies in the 1950s, because they were owned by the same organisation as the Bristol factory, weren't allowed to buy any other make of bus, and Bristol couldn't supply buses to anyone outside the group. This sounds a bit like Poland before 1990...........

AEC Renown LT #LT165

1 may 1993 - Crawley, Sussex, UK. This London bus normally lives in the Covent Garden museum and was only allowed to run in the HCVS rally twice in the early 1990s, before it went back permanently to the museum. It is shown in the form it ran throughout the Second World War, with anti-bomb netting on the windows and white paint for extra visibility during the lighting blackout. The LT type was an important forerunner of the standard RT type of the late 1930s.

Gilford AS6 #4

3 may 1992 - Crawley, Sussex, UK. Another view of the preserved Gilford AS6 at the midway rest point of the HCVS rally. This is probably the only Gilford coach running today, although various others exist and are awaiting restoration. This was a typical country coach of 1930s Britain.

Guy Arab III/Crossley #133

2 may 1986 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. The Guy Arab was a popular bus with many operators. This one ran with Burton Corporation (Burton on Trent, where the best beer is made) and the fancy paintwork is typical of a town operator. Note the strange window arrangement on the Crossley body – Crossley also built complete buses, which also looked a little odd.

Leyland Lion PLSC1 #C295

2 may 1986 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. Another bus from the Greater Manchester Transport Museum. This is a 1927 Leyland Lion previously operated by Ribble, who were a major bus operator in the northwest of England.

Albion Victor PH115 / Reading B32F #24

2 may 1986 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. A Phototrans debut - a bus from Guernsey (Channel Islands) – I think it’s an Albion Valkyrie from 1940. The owner would have been Guernsey Railway Company – although by this time they had no railways, being just a bus operator. The bus has two registrations – one for Guernsey and the other for England – as the Channel Islands are not (strictly speaking) part of the UK.

Tilling-Stevens B10C2 / Brush #JG 669

2 may 1986 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. A preserved Tilling Stevens petrol-engined bus of 1930, belonging to the East Kent Road Car Company, seen on an HCVS rally. Note the passengers’ baggage on the roof! Two men are busy looking for their cat, maybe…..

Leyland Lion LT7C #44

2 may 1984 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. Another entry in the annual HCVS London to Brighton run was this Leyland Lion of 1937, which has an unusual ‘gearless’ transmission system. It formerly operated in Lytham St Anne’s, Lancashire, just a short distance from Blackpool.

Leyland G6 / Phoenix #14

2 may 1984 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. An early Leyland bus. This one was operated by Todmorden Corporation in Lancashire from 1921 until 1928, when it was withdrawn - bus design was changing so quickly, it was already obsolete. It is shown some years ago, taking part in the annual Historic Commercial Vehicles rally and is currently at the Manchester Museum of Transport.

Guy Vixen Special GS #GS26

2 may 1984 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. One of the neat little Guy Special buses built to London Transport specifications in the early 1950s. When LT disposed of them, many went for further service with independent operators, so a lot have survived in preservation. This particular example is now owned by a private enthusiast in Shropshire.

Tilling Stevens TS6 / Brush #170

3 may 1987 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. Something a little different and uniquely British. The Tilling-Stevens Petrol-Electric bus was designed to be easily driven by tram drivers (no gear lever). A petrol engine runs at a constant speed and drives an electric generator, which in turn powers an electric motor to turn the wheels. To increase speed, the driver moves control levers just like a tramcar. This rare survivor was found in a field and completely rebuilt from a heap of junk by a friend of mine. It originally ran for the North Western Road Car Company and now lives in a Manchester museum.

Commer Shooting Brake #EC 634

3 may 1987 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. This fabulous little machine was built by Commer Cars in 1909 for a wealthy Lord’s private estate, and would carry his guests from his mansion in Cumbria to the railway station, on shooting expeditions and anywhere they needed to go. It eventually finished up in a barn, where it was discovered in the 1950s and fully restored. This is one of the oldest buses in the UK.

Commer Commando / Harrington #EUX 959

3 may 1987 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. The annual London to Brighton Historic Commercial Vehicle rally always features a selection of buses and coaches, many of which are new entrants. This Commer Commando is typical of the smaller, post-war coaches that ran in great numbers in the UK – many were ex-military transport. A nice smiley bus!

Dennis Lancet III / Reading #ASV 900

3 may 1987 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. Dennis was a major UK bus builder until about 30 years ago. The company then stopped making buses completely until, under new ownership in the 1990s, it started producing a few double-deck chassis and then the Dennis Dart, which is a major success story and found just about everywhere. So, this is the grandfather of the Dennis Dart!

DAF SB220 / Optare Delta #160

5 june 2008 - Crawley, West Sussex – Friary Way bus station. An older bus, unique in the Southdown PSV fleet, is this Optare Delta bought second-hand in 2006.

Alexander Dennis Enviro 200 II 10,7m #102

5 june 2008 - Crawley, West Sussex – Friary Way bus station. A TWB debut for this operator, formed in 2002 to run school and rail replacement contracts and now also providing country bus services in East Surrey and Sussex. Fourteen double and single deck buses are operated, including this Dart Enviro 200, one of a pair bought new in 2007 and branded for Route 526.

Scania CN94UB #549

5 june 2008 - Crawley, West Sussex – Southgate Avenue. Busways in this street run in both directions. Buses approach the concrete guide channels at normal speed and have priority through traffic junctions, making the service fast and reliable. Where there are no guided sections, conventional painted bus lanes are provided. Bus stops have raised pavements and electronic information displays. Tramways on the cheap? Maybe – certainly a very effective way to knock down more pedestrians :-)

Scania CN94UB #550

5 june 2008 - Crawley, West Sussex – London Road. I mentioned guided busway yesterday, but didn’t know there were no pictures on TWB (or that there isn’t really a Polish term for it). So, here is a section of busway on the Crawley Fastway network, in the centre of a dual carriageway road. The buses that operate here are specially fitted Scanias with horizontal guide wheels that steer the front wheels (so conventional buses can’t use the guideway). You can just see a guide wheel behind the front door.
