Thanks for your interesting pictures from Gabrovo. Is it true that trolleybuses are no longer operating?
Yes, unfortunately it is true.
It all began in 2013 when trolleybuses were stopped "temporarily" because of work on the water cycle project of Gabrovo. They had to enter in service again in 2015 with the opening of the new roundabout junction on bul. Bryanska with bul. Stefan Karadja (ie. Consultative polyclinic). Quite purposely on the new junction were not mounted large pillars (suitable for cable network for trolleybuses) but were mounted small one`s which are suitable for street lighting only.
After 25.03.2013 the trolleybuses never left the depot but they are still alive at the moment. The municipality is currently doing a project for integrated urban transport under the operational programs of the European Union.

Despite numerous protests, opinions and attempts to hold a local referendum on the trolley transport, the municipality refused in any way to listen to people`s opinions. Trying to eliminate trolley transport and replace it with electric buses and CNG-buses. The case in Gabrovo is identical to stopping the trolleybuses in Veliko Tarnovo few years ago - due to the construction of the junction "Kachitsa". European programs for public transport are very useful for some cities in Bulgaria but unfortunately in some other cities (such as Gabrovo) municipality just wants to absorb money, not to do the best for the town.
However, statistics show that half the population of Gabrovo walks on foot, and only 6% use public transport. The costs are large, the town is long, there is a demographic crisis - 1/4 of the population is aged over 65 years as the city was depopulated and aging.
