Guy Arab III / Park Royal #67

2 august 2009 - Gosport, UK - Stokes Bay: Another bus which has not travelled far from its original operating area is this 1949 open top Guy Arab 3 originally with Southampton City Transport. Once numbered 167, it was given the number 67 when the roof was removed at some time in the 1960s.

Guy Arab I / Reading #55

2 august 2009 - Gosport, UK - Stokes Bay: With correct destination showing, this wartime `utility` Guy Arab 1 is in the same town as it always operated in service, being the first ever Guy bought by the Gosport and Fareham Omnibus Company. Guy was one of only a few builders authorised by the Government to supply new buses at this time, as raw materials were very scarce and nearly all were required to make weapons of war. Bus bodies were therefore very basic in construction and the materials used were very poor - like most utility vehicles, this one didn`t have a long life and was completely rebodied in 1955.

Guy Arab I/Reading #53

2 august 2009 - Stokes Bay, Gosport (UK). This bus was built during World War Two, so originally had a ‘utility’ body, simply made using cheap materials, as good quality metal was in very short supply. It was rebodied in 1955 and ran with the Gosport and Fareham company until 1970. Restored by First Group (who now owns the Provincial company) in 1984, it is still owned by them as a heritage bus.

Guy Arab IV/Park Royal #MFN 888

3 may 2009 - Redhill (UK) – Brighton Road - HCVS Rally. The Guy Arab was a strong and reliable bus, although not as refined as some other makes. By the time that the Mark 4 version came along in the mid-1950s, the radiator could be hidden behind a ‘tin front’ as seen here – this example also has platform doors, which weren’t too common on double deck buses at that time. The first Guy Arab IV pictured on TWB.

Guy Arab II/Park Royal #G351

3 may 2009 - Redhill (UK) – Brighton Road. Today is the traditional London to Brighton rally of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society and several interesting buses always take part and they pass the end of my street. Here is the wartime Guy Arab bus from London, with ‘utility’ bodywork made largely from wood and fabric, as steel was not obtainable. London Transport would not have bought Guy buses through choice, either, but had to take anything that was available.

Guy Arab II/Park Royal #G351

5 april 2009 - Cobham (UK). In wartime, UK bus production was subject to Government control - only certain manufacturers were permitted to make buses to this standard ‘utility’ design, made with low-grade materials and with all non-essential features removed. London Transport normally only bought buses to its own design from AEC or Leyland, but in this period had to take whatever it could get, including a batch of these Guy Arab vehicles. As soon as new RT buses came in quantity, London got rid of these to other operators. This is now the only survivor and has been preserved for many years.

Guy Arab III / Park Royal #167

3 may 1992 - Crawley, Sussex, UK. A line of buses taking part in the 1992 HCVC London - Brighton rally. The Guy Arab was a very strong and reliable bus in the 1940s and 1950s and was the choice of many town and city-owned operators, like Southampton. They removed the roof in 1967 and got another eight years of service from this bus. Alongside is a Bristol Lodekka of Southern Vectis, the Isle of Wight operator.

Guy Arab III/Crossley #133

2 may 1986 - Crawley, West Sussex, UK. The Guy Arab was a popular bus with many operators. This one ran with Burton Corporation (Burton on Trent, where the best beer is made) and the fancy paintwork is typical of a town operator. Note the strange window arrangement on the Crossley body – Crossley also built complete buses, which also looked a little odd.

Guy Arab IV / Metro Cammell #JOJ976

7 may 2007 - Birmingham, Holloway Circus (Queensway). Piękny stary piętrus pozuje przed nieco mniej urodziwym 30-piętrowym bloczyskiem w samym centrum Birmingham. Autobus należy do kolekcji pobliskiego muzeum transportu i kursuje jako dowozówka z centrum miasta do rzeczonego muzeum. BTW: do czego to prostować? :P
