25 june 2010 - Hythe, Hampshire – Hythe Pier Tramway. A TWB debut for this, the oldest continuously-operating pier tram in the world. Built in 1881, it was electrified in 1922 and has run with the same vehicles ever since. This view shows nearly all the 2ft gauge, single track line from the shore to the pier head (650m) where the tram meets a frequent ferry boat service from Southampton.

25 june 2010 - Hythe, Hampshire – Hythe Pier Tramway. This odd little tramway is electrified at 250 volts DC, using an unprotected third rail - scary! There are signs warning people not to touch the live rail, so that’s alright, then :-)

25 june 2010 - Hythe, Hampshire – Hythe Pier Tramway. The pier tram reaches the shore end of the tramway, where there are a couple of sidings and a locomotive shed. Note the unprotected third rail. The tiny locomotives were built in 1917 for the Avonmouth Mustard Gas Factory and came here after WW1 (weapons of mass destruction aren’t new - the British probably had them first).

25 june 2010 - Hythe, Hampshire – Hythe Pier Tramway. A rare view of the ‘other’ side of the tram, which can only be seen by stepping over the live rail. The locomotives (of which there are two) were originally battery powered. Each of the three coaches is slightly different and all are of great age. The locomotive always pushes the train towards the pier head and pulls it back to the shore.
