18 march 2010 - Coimbra (PT) – depot/zajezdnia Guarda-Inglese. A Coimbra tram. The city ran metre-gauge trams until 1980, when trolleybuses (first introduced here in 1947) took over the remaining routes. By this time, all the trams were very old, but kept in good condition – what a pity that some of the lines didn’t survive just a few more years, as they would certainly now still be operating. This one is an extremely rare type – a Birney Safety Car built by Brill of Philadelphia in 1928 and one of just five to reach Europe. Many smaller cities in USA had trams exactly like these.
