Here you can read more information https://www.rigassatiksme.lv/en/news/bus-route-no-33-to-be-replaced-by-trolleybus-route-no-3-as-of-april-1/
P.S. It's the first time in Riga when a bus route is replaced by trolleybus one.
yes, nice to hear another positive news from Riga, especially that the two other Baltic capitals are degrading their trolleybus systems :(
That's not all! Riga has also made some great changes in tram network, so tram route no. 6 has been extended to Ausekļa Street and next week the reconstruction works in Brīvības gatve will be finished and it will give possibility for low-floor trams to run on fully new tracks.
As it seems there is no plan for building trolleybus wires to Kundziņsala or somewhere else, because Rigas Satiksme says that it's too expensive, running trolleybuses using diesel generator in short distances seems for them to be cheaper. Maybe something will change if the EU project "Trolley" http://www.trolley-project.eu/ will be extended and Latvia also will be included. But it seems that Baltic states are and will be outside this project.
A little bit about tram network: After four days the reconstruction works in Brīvības gatve, where the old tram line was adapted for low-floor trams (new tracks, better power supply, new tram stop platforms, etc.) will be finished and the tram routes no. 3 and 6 will return back there. It is also planned to extend tram line no. 6 further till Berģi (approximately 2 km), hopefully this plan will be realized. In next two years it is also planned to adapt tram wires (for pantograph) for low-floor trams on route no. 4.
I must visit Riga some time. THis is not my favorite direction but maybe I will break my habits.
