16 march 2010 - Almada (PT) – Corroios, depot/zajezdnia MTS. This is a very special tram. Although it looks like a normal Combino Plus, this is actually the Siemens test bed for their Hybrid Energy Storage system. Siemens hope to sell this new technology to places where overhead wires aren’t wanted in historic city centres – other manufacturers are also developing their own systems to do this, so trams can run short distances away from the wires.

I guess so - each manufaturer has their own different 'solution', but I think that is the way being tested by Siemens. Some type of new battery technology is involved - mounted on the roof - all a bit 'hush hush'.
