Don't ever believe anyone who claims, that pedestrianised streets with a bus lane are a good idea - this is what such a 'pedestrian zone' looks like in Lewisham Town Centre just after the end of a Sunday market - crowds of people either side of the road and at bus stops; every few seconds someone quickly nips across the street. In Croydon, where they have a tram running past a similar pedestrian area, people don't have a problem with walking on the tram tracks...
