Manx Electric Railway/

Milnes Vestibuled Saloon #5

18 june 1976 - Douglas, Isle of Man – MER depot, Derby Castle. A general view of the depot yard. Part of the illuminated ‘Electric Railway’ sign on the hillside above can be seen, also at least three more of those three-way track points than straphan loves so much…….

Milnes Vestibuled Saloon #7

21 september 1987 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Derby Castle. The Manx Electric railway terminus and horse tram depot just alongside. The track gauge is the same, but there is no connection between the two systems, there was once talk of this. MER #7 and #5 (in the distance) are both ‘Tunnel’ cars of 1894 - so called because they had seats along each side, under the windows (just visible through the open door).

21 september 1987 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Derby Castle. Inside a Manx electric ‘Tunnel’ car – very cosy! Would you prefer one of these for your journey to work? See http://www.phototrans.eu/14,246345,0.html for a view of the outside of this car. Remember - these are a proper means of transport, and not just museum trams.

12 september 1994 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Derby Castle. MER 7 rattles across the depot entrance with a northbound service. Note the narrow 3 feet track gauge and the unusual three-way point. Douglas town can be seen in the background.

12 september 1994 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Derby Castle. MER saloon tram 7 of 1894 coasts down to the terminal sidings from the depot, ready to form the next service to Laxey and Ramsey. The start of the long and steep climb from here to the cliff top can be seen in the background.

Milnes Vestibuled Saloon #9

18 june 1976 - Douglas, Isle of Man - Derby Castle. Saloon tram 9 stands at the southern terminus of the MER before setting off on its 30km trip to Ramsey. Note the railway-style oil lamp on the rear of the tram – these are retained for safety reasons, in case the electric lights fail in the dark. The Victorian iron and glass canopy covered the terminal tracks of the Douglas horse trams, but was demolished soon afterwards in a mindless act of vandalism.

18 june 1976 - Laxey, Isle of Man. Lazey tram station, the junction between the Manx Electric interurban and the Snaefell Mountain Railway (although this isn’t a junction, strictly speaking, as the SMR runs on a 6 inch wider track. There is a short mixed-gauge section here, where SMR trams can be lifted onto 3 feet gauge bogies for transfer to the MER workshops in Douglas). Saloon tram 9 of 1894 with an open ‘toastrack’ trailer is on a Douglas to Ramsey service and trailer 56 is a spare vehicle for use as necessary. This particular trailer was later converted for disabled access.
