11 april 1956 - Weingarten (DE) – Charlottenplatz. Another ET motor car, this time drawing ancient 4-wheeled trailer #E8 – this dated right back to steam tramway days and was built by MAN in 1888. Amazingly, several of these trailers remained in passenger service until the line closed in 1959 -over 70 years old! I wonder how many 2009 trams will still be running in 2080? 11 april 1956 - Baienfurt (DE)- Baienfurt Sud. More rare photos, this time of a long-vanished and little-known metre-gauge tramway in Germany. The 6.5km long Lokalbahn Ravensburg-Weingarten-Baienfurt ran from 1888 until 1959 and was electrified in 1911. After World War II, it became the only tramway owned and operated by the German Federal Railways. Here, one of the large and imposing bogie trams runs through Baienfurt village – these had a Ganz look about them, but were actually built by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen in 1910 and lasted until the end.
